Parent Communication

Regarding Embedded Time for Professional Learning

In September 2012 the South Queens Family of Schools adopted the embedded time model to enhance professional learning for teachers. There is overwhelming evidence that student learning and student engagement increase when teachers have opportunities to work together in Professional Learning Communities (PLC). Embedded time in the South Queens family of schools has been very successful in its first year. Teachers, support staff, administration and the community continue to see the benefits in the classroom with student learning and student engagement.

With the support of our staff and SAC, Forest Heights Community School will be introducing the embedded time model for the 2013-2014 school year.

What will “embedded time” look like?

· On designated days of the school year, the school day will be reduced by 90 instructional minutes for staff to collaborate and engage in professional learning.

· To support the early dismissal dates, instructional time will be extended by an average of seven to 10 minutes each day for the entire school year.

· The added daily instructional time will allow for 14 ninety-minute early dismissals per school year on various afternoons-see attached schedule.

The Department of Education has been a leader in working with the following partners to review research and develop a framework for moving forward with embedded time for professional learning:

· Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU);

· Nova Scotia School Boards Association (NSSBA);

· University Schools of Education;

· Nova Scotia Educational Leadership Consortium (NSELC);

· Association of Nova Scotia Educational Administrators (ANSEA).

Benefits to students and their families include:

o Decrease in the number of times teachers will be away from their students for professional development;

o Reduced substitute days and costs;

o Enhanced examination of student work so supports are in place sooner;

o Continued support for inquiry-based learning and student engagement;

o Increased student achievement in all areas, including math and literacy;

o Improved assessment practices;

o Issues more effectively addressed such as cyber bullying and the development of social emotional competencies of students;

o A classroom environment that allows students to work from their preferred learning styles and talents.

Evidence based Nova Scotia documents that support this direction include:

· Report and Recommendations of the Education Professional Development Committee; (EPDC) – 2009

· Department of Education Response to the above Report – 2009;

· Report of the Professional Learning Communities Study Committee – 2011;

· Steps to Effective and Sustainable Public Education in NS – 2011;

· Kids & Learning First – 2012

Principals and regional staff consulted with school staffs and their SACs and developed a modified schedule that will begin in the 2013-2014 school year.

· On average in the feeder system, the day will be lengthened by an average of seven to 10 minutes each day for the entire school year, through extending and reorganizing the school day. (Daily instruction in NS can vary between 240 – and 360 minutes per day in grades P to 2 – including recess; and between 300 and 360 minutes per day in grades 3 to 6 – including recess; and between 300 and 360 in grade 7 to 12 – not including recess).

· On designated days throughout the school year (schedule attached), students will be dismissed early. Staff will remain at school for professional learning after the students leave. This structured time will be used to examine student achievement data and to plan for specific strategies to improve student learning and student engagement.

We appreciate your support as we continue to find creative ways to encourage professional learning for our teachers and to improve on student achievement and engagement. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the vice-principal at 275-2700.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Nickerson:

On behalf of the Board of Governors, please extend my thanks to your organizing committee for their efforts in hosting the NSSAF Division 3 Boys’ Soccer Championship. It was a pleasure to attend the opening ceremony! I enjoyed the young student singing O’Canada! Congratulations on the gold medal performance!

Participating student-athletes and coaches from throughout the province enjoyed a truly memorable event as a result of your leadership and hard work. The NSSAF realizes that in order to assist us with this activity you and your committee had to make a personal sacrifice. With time being as scarce as it is we, at the Federation, are very appreciative of your efforts. Thanks to people such as you we are able to offer a wide range of activities which adds so much to the total development of the student-athletes in our province.

The NSSAF is indeed fortunate to be able to call upon such quality people to organize these competitions. The Federation and its member schools very much appreciate your commitment to “Education through Sport”.

Thank you once again.

Best regards,

A big congratulations to the Senior Boys Soccer Team who defeated
Hants North 3-2 on Saturday to capture the Division 3 Provincial
Championship. Scoring for the Falcons were Mitchell Walker with an
excellent volley from just outside the box, Ben Garland with a picture
perfect head into the back corner and Cole Mulrooney finishing the
Hants North Flames chances with a hard strike into the bottom right
corner following a beautiful set up that started with Logan Forbes and
Drake Countway in the back four.

From the awesome defensive line that held the North Hants attackers
at bay, to the steady play of the midfield and strikers, the game was
enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd of parents and fans that included
many alumni and former teachers. Well done boys and Mr. Nickerson on
an excellent end to your season!

Exams are being written from January 28th – 31st. Only students who are writing exams should be in attendance on the day of each exam. If a student is not writing an exam, he/she should remain at home. During exam week students will be either in the gymnasium writing and exam or in the two designated areas which are the library and the cafeteria. We encourage students who are only writing one exam on any given day to arrange for transportation that arrives shortly before and leaves shortly after.
